Jio negotiating tower sharing deal with BSNL

25 Apr 2014

Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecoms startup of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is involved in talks with state-backed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) regarding a tower sharing deal, potentially giving the newcomer access to an additional 61,000 towers, Hindu Business Line writes. BSNL’s director of consumer mobility, Anupam Shrivastava told the paper that negotiations with Jio were in the ‘final stages’ and adding that the telco had offered Jio a bulk deal, granting the cellco a discount if it purchases space on a certain number of towers. Further, under the deal currently being discussed, BSNL will lease access to any towers Jio builds outside of BSNL’s footprint. As reported by CommsUpdate earlier this week, Jio is set to launch commercial services in Q3 2014 and has signed deals to lease towers from Reliance Communications (RCOM), Bharti Airtel, Viom Networks and the Indian division of American Tower Corporation (ATC).
