Fixed broadband subs exceed 20,000

The Communications Authority of Maldives has reported that fixed broadband subscribers reached 20,232 across the island nation at the end of March 2014, up from 19,594 twelve months earlier. Mobile customers totalled 637,339, up from 625,161 three months earlier and 574,211 at end-March 2013. Pre-paid users accounted for the majority (88.2%, or 562,256) of wireless users at 31 March 2014, with mobile broadband customers totalling 129,512 at that date, up from 81,735 a year earlier. According to the regulator, the number of fixed telephony lines (including payphones) fell slightly from 24,118 to 22,554 over the twelve-month period.
