Federated States of Micronesia moves towards telecoms liberalisation

22 Apr 2014

Manny Mori, president of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), formally signed the country’s Telecommunication Liberalisation bill on 3 April 2014, the government has announced. Hailed a significant breakthrough and a turning-point by the government, the liberalisation bill ‘signifies a refreshed momentum in the nation’s effort to boost its communication capacities’, an official press release noted.

In September 2013 the FSM and the Republic of Palau signed a joint communique to proceed with a Palau-FSM Submarine Cable System, following negotiations with the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Previously, in July 2013 the World Bank announced that approximately USD40 million would be made available in grant funding to implement a submarine cable system for the FSM.
