MTS launches LTE in St Petersburg; tests VoLTE

15 Apr 2014

Russian wireless giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has confirmed that it has activated its commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in St Petersburg, with end-users expected to witness downlink transmission speeds of around 60Mbps. The network covers the entire city, including the surrounding suburbs and industrial zones. Dmitry Rilov, director of MTS’ North-West branch, told ComNews.ru that the cellco has also tested voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology in the city, but has no immediate plans to introduce it commercially, citing a lack of customer demand.
