Pakistan’s wireless market leader in terms of subscribers, Mobilink, has announced that it will roll out what it claims will be the nation’s ‘largest’ and ‘most modernised’ 3G-ready network, with more than 9,000 cell sites by the end of July 2014. According to local media outlet The News, the network overhaul will bring parent company Vimpelcom’s total investment in Pakistan’s telecom industry to USD4.3 billion. Mobilink’s announcement follows the revelation earlier this month that number two provider Telenor had completed its network upgrade programme which, as previously reported by CommsUpdate saw the replacement of its entire network with new equipment, making all of its roughly 7,500 cell sites 3G-ready. Both cellcos are gearing up for the long-awaited auction of 3G and 4G licences, which is due to take place on 23 April this year.
