Intertelecom CDMA subscribers grow 19% in 2013; data usage up 77%

19 Mar 2014

Ukrainian CDMA mobile operator Intertelecom has reported on its website that its subscriber base increased by 19% in twelve months to more than 1.4 million at the end of December 2013, while its users’ total bandwidth consumption in the fourth quarter of 2013 increased by 77% year-on-year to more than 11.6 petabytes. The cellco added that customer take-up was stimulated by the expansion of its range of devices along with major changes to tariffs to meet the needs of the fast-growing smartphone and tablet user segments. Since March 2013 most internet tariff packages may be added to voice packages at no extra cost, while in September Intertelecom launched new unlimited wireless internet/calling packages. It also simplified the process of connection with the starter pack ‘3G Internet’ including a RUIM card, while Micro and Nano RUIM cards support various popular devices such as iPad Air, iPad 4 and iPad mini tablets, all compatible with Intertelecom’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev B technology with peak data speeds of 14.7Mbps. Previously, the operator reported that by the end of 2013 devices that support Rev B standard accounted for more than 60% of all equipment sold by the company; other popular compatible devices on the network include personal Wi-Fi routers and the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c smartphones.

Intertelecom also reported that during 2013 it increased its number of Rev B base stations nationwide by 31%, expanding the high speed network to cover more than 13,000 settlements in Ukraine, and more than 71% of the population. Furthermore, in July 2013 the operator and vendor partner Alcatel-Lucent completed the construction of its nationwide IP/MPLS mobile backbone network. In 2014 the cellco aims to increase the number of base stations by a further 30%.
