QAM, bam, thank you NSN! Vendor assuages TIM’s QAM qualms with uplink upgrade

11 Mar 2014

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) have successfully achieved uplink data speeds of 11Mbps, using the vendor’s HSUPA 16QAM technology. The tests took place at Telecom Italia’s lab in Turin, and in combination with unique NSN advanced receivers, the solution can ‘double the peak data rate and significantly increase the network capacity’. It remains to be seen whether the HSUPA 16QAM technology will be introduced on a commercial basis; in its recent FY2013 report TIM confirmed that its 4G LTE network had achieved the ‘widest LTE coverage in Italy’, with a total of 651 municipalities reached.
