Jio calls for spectrum reshuffle

10 Mar 2014

Reliance Jio Infcomm, the telecoms arm of petrochemical giant Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has requested that the telecom ministry reshuffle some of the 1800MHz spectrum blocks it recently won in the Northeast region to provide it with a contiguous block, India PR Wire writes. Jio won 32 blocks of 1800MHz spectrum, 25 of which are contiguous. In a letter to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Jio noted that non-contiguous frequencies were unsuitable for the cellco’s plans: ‘Dispersed frequency allocation for seven blocks in non-contiguous sets will have very limited use for an operator planning to deploy a 4G technology like LTE [Long Term Evolution].’ The DoT has previously stated that it would support frequency reorganisation to allow for the allocation of contiguous spectrum, ‘subject to availability.’
