Own goal: footballer’s mobile venture flounders

10 Feb 2014

Set’Mobile, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) owned by Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto’o, is struggling to compete with the market’s existing wireless players, Orange Cameroun of France and South Africa’s MTN. Set’Mobile, which has signed a partnership deal with Orange to operate over its infrastructure, went live in July 2012 with the aim of bringing cheap mobile voice and data services to the market. However, Jeune Afrique writes that the company has been plagued by management problems and is struggling to retain customers, while the firm is also reported to owe Orange around XAF300 million (USD622,000).
