Telcel gains from number portability as Iusacell loses out

24 Jan 2014

Mexico’s Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFETEL) reports that 12.35 million telephone numbers were ported during 2013, representing an increase of 63% year-on-year. The main beneficiary was Telcel, which added a net 1.3 million ported subscribers. Telefonica-owned Movistar lost 193,000 ported users in 2012, but saw an improvement in 2013 by losing only 17,700. Iusacell, however, lost more than double the number of ported subscribers in 2013 than it did in 2012, losing 1.13 million as opposed to the 545,832 it lost during the previous year.
