Vodafone Spain plans to launch commercial fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband services in April 2014 with its fibre access network joint venture partner Orange Spain, with coverage initially spanning 800,000 households in twelve cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Zaragoza, Cordoba, Valladolid, Alcorcon, Badalona and Hospitalet de Llobregat. The information was revealed in an interview with Vodafone Spain’s recently-appointed business division head Andres Vicente, quoted by Spanish site Kelisto. In March 2013 Vodafone and Orange formed a partnership to split equally a EUR1 billion (USD1.3 billion) investment in an FTTH network, aiming to pass 800,000 premises by March 2014, rising to three million and six million premises by September 2015 and 2017, respectively. In total, the fibre-optic network will cover 50 of Spain’s major cities when complete. Orange Spain already had relatively small-scale FTTH services available, having commenced commercial FTTH trials in January 2010, while in November that year Orange launched a 100Mbps FTTH service in Madrid and Barcelona, with a wider launch to around 100,000 households in April 2013, TeleGeography notes.
Whilst Vodafone was revealing its upcoming FTTH launch plans, Orange Spain yesterday announced a new promotional offer for users covered by its existing FTTH network. The firm is offering existing Orange mobile customers a 100Mbps download/10Mbps upload direct fibre connection bundled with unlimited calls to landlines, 1,000 minutes per month off-peak calls to mobiles, 300 minutes per month calls to 60 international destinations, an option of two fixed lines on a single phone number, plus ‘Smart Wi-Fi 300Mbps’ with its latest Livebox router, for a monthly fee of EUR31.39 including VAT per month plus a line fee, valid for twelve months. After the promotional period, or for non-Orange mobile customers, the monthly price for the above bundle is EUR43.49 including VAT plus a line fee. Customers have the option of taking the Orange fibre IPTV service for EUR12.10 including VAT.
