Shaw revenues up 3% in fiscal Q1

Canadian triple-play cableco and satellite TV operator Shaw Communications has reported consolidated financial and operating results for its fiscal first quarter ended 30 November 2013, showing that total revenue for the three-month period rose by 3% year-on-year to CAD1.36 billion (USD1.25 billion), while consolidated quarterly operating income before amortisation improved by 1% to CAD608 million, despite higher capital investment compared to a year earlier. Net income of CAD245 million in September-November 2013 was higher by CAD10 million year-on-year, as improved operating income and lower interest expense were only partially offset by higher income taxes.

Revenue in Shaw’s cable network division climbed by 4% year-on-year to CAD844 million in the three months to the end of November 2013, and cable operating income before amortisation rose 2% to CAD405 million. Cable TV customers decreased by a net 29,619 during the quarter to 2,010,628, while cable broadband internet subscribers increased by 2,746 to 1,893,252, and cable telephony lines in service also increased marginally in three months, rising by a net 1,351 to 1,361,311.
