Idea mulling 4G launch and expansion to pan-India 3G

15 Jan 2014

Idea cellular is hopeful of launching 4G wireless broadband services in two to three years, whilst extending 3G nationwide, the cellco’s managing director Himanshu Kapania told CNBC-TV18. Kapania noted that if contiguous spectrum is available ‘at the right price’ in the upcoming frequency auction, the operator may be able to expand its wireless broadband services across all operating circles with the expectation of an upsurge in demand for the mobile data services.

The official was also optimistic about the cellco retaining its existing concessions: ‘On licence renewal, which is critical for the year 2014 and 2015 – both licences are due for renewal in 2014-2015 and 2016 – it is important that these licences be retained and customer service is not disrupted at all. So, we are looking forward to support from the government and policies to make sure that the licence renewal goes through smoothly for all operators irrespective of the price that is paid.’
