The Solomon Islands operator Solomon Telekom, which provides cellular services under the name Our Telekom, has announced plans to deploy 26 new wireless towers nationwide over the next few months to improve mobile network coverage in rural areas. The telco added that construction work on many of the towers has already begun, with all 26 sites expected to be live by the end of March. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Solomon Telekom claimed 56.2% of the nation’s 337,750 mobile subscribers as of 30 September 2013, with competition coming from bemobile. Solomon Telekom is 32.6% owned by UK-based Cable & Wireless Communications, with the remainder held by the government.
