Channel Tunnel mobile services to be launched in March by EE and Vodafone

9 Jan 2014

UK mobile network operators EE and Vodafone UK have reportedly inked a ten-year agreement with Eurotunnel under which they will provide services in the Channel Tunnel. Under the terms of the deal, the two cellcos will provide both 2G and 3G connectivity in the North Tunnel (UK to France) from March 2014, while in the future 4G access is also expected to be introduced. In order to deliver services underground the companies involved said that they had overcome a series of technical challenges, with work having been conducted without disruption to railway traffic, in a confined environment under stringent safety conditions.

Eurotunnel has equivalent agreements with French cellcos Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR, all of which cooperated on the installation of GSM-P services in the South Running Tunnel in 2012.
