PTA orders cellcos to halt call set-up charge

2 Jan 2014

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has called on all of the country’s mobile network operators to immediately reverse their recent introduction of set-up charges. In a press release the regulator noted that the nation’s cellco’s had begun imposing a set-up charge of PKR0.10 (USD0.0009) plus tax on each call in the latter half of December 2013, posting notifications regarding the new charges on their respective websites. Citing the Telecom Reorganisation Act and Consumer Protection Regulations 2009, the PTA has said that its decision has been made with a view to ‘safeguarding customers’ interests’. As such, operators have been told to ‘implement the order without causing any discomfort to the mobile phone subscribers’.
