Wind of change? Vimpelcom eyes sale, merger, refinancing for Italian cellco

Amsterdam-based international telecoms group Vimpelcom Ltd is considering selling, merging or refinancing its Italian unit Wind Telecomunicazioni (Wind Italy), which has debts of around USD14 billion, the Financial Times newspaper has reported. The company has been in discussions with Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa, which owns 3 Italia, the paper said, citing sources familiar with the situation. However, the talks have not yet progressed as far as negotiations on a deal.
