Telenor Norge now offering 4G in more than 100 municipalities

19 Dec 2013

Norway’s Telenor Group has announced that its domestic unit is now offering its 4G services in more than 100 municipalities, meaning that more than half of the country’s population is now within the network footprint. Commenting on the development, Telenor Norge CEO Berit Svendsen was cited as saying: ‘We are delighted that we now have the highest percentage of 4G coverage on the market. In total, Telenor will have rolled out approximately 2,300 base stations over the year, and the rate of expansion during the last two months has been over 300 base stations per month.’ Coupled with the network expansion, the company also noted that it now has almost half a million active 4G customers, while it also claims that ‘virtually all sales of smartphones are now 4G phones’.

Telenor Norge is also reportedly upgrading its third-generation infrastructure, and with the operator’s 3G network now available to 95% of Norwegians, in the last three months of 2013 it claims to have improved coverage in some 95 municipalities.

Looking ahead, further coverage enhancements are expected, on the back of Telenor having been assigned new frequencies; as previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in early-December the Norwegian Post & Telecoms Authority (NPT) confirmed that Telenor had successfully bid for 2×10MHz in the 800MHz, 2×5MHz in the 900MHz band and 2×10MHz in the 1800MHz band. With the company saying the new spectrum will allow it to improve coverage in every county nationwide, starting early 2014, Ms Svendsen noted: ‘We look forward to shortly publishing the list of places where we will improve coverage. Every county in Norway will now receive improved coverage – not to mention that indoor coverage will be significantly better.’
