Hong Kong’s Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) plans to offer access to a total of 16,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in operation by early next year. Around 1,000 of its existing hotspots offer speeds of up to 1Gbps, and HGC has announced that it will deploy another 5,000 1Gbps hotspots by 2014. It has not been confirmed yet if the 1Gbps Wi-Fi service is being offered to both HGC broadband customers and Hutchison (3) mobile device users. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Wi-Fi hotspot access for 3 mobile and fixed broadband subscribers has been provided via a third party, Y5Zone – which was bought by fibre internet provider Hong Kong Broadband Network in January 2013, and the Y5Zone network has been expanded from 6,500 hotspots in Hong Kong at that date to approximately 10,000 by early December 2013. HGC’s 1Gbps Wi-Fi access is currently available to its ‘3Home Broadband’ subscribers on the ‘3Home Broadband Total Wi-Fi Solution’ package.
