Nepal Telecom (NT) has launched mobile phone services in Samagaun, a village development committee (VDC) in Gorkha District in the Gandaki Zone of northern-central Nepal. The firm’s district chief, Chandra Bahadur Shrestha, said that the mobile service was launched via a satellite link on 5 December using a mini base transceiver station (BTS) tower there. The official says that the new BTS supports up to 500 simultaneous CDMA mobile calls. Further, NT’s district office in the region plans to extend CDMA service coverage to neighbouring Chhekampar VDC in January 2014, while another five VDCs are set to receive coverage within the next year.
