Myanmar’s government says it will announce which consortia it has selected to partner with state-owned telco Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) on 18 December, the Myanmar Times writes. Consortia headed by France’s Orange Group, Singapore Telecom (SingTel) and KDDI of Japan have all submitted proposals to the government, although the operators did not disclose details of their respective offers. KDDI leads a consortium including Sumitomo of Japan and local partners A1 Construction and Myanmar ICT Development Corporation whilst SingTel has partnered with KBZ Group and Myanmar Telephone Company. Orange, meanwhile, has teamed up with Japan’s Marubeni Corporation. The trio are competing for a tie-up with MPT intended to make the incumbent ready for competition when new entrants to the market Ooredoo and Telenor launch services. In order to bring the telco up to speed, MPT is in need of the expertise, management skills and capital offered by its potential foreign partners.
