Mystery telco set to launch in Uganda

13 Dec 2013

A new, unnamed, mobile operator is gearing up for launch in Uganda, PC Tech reports. The incoming operator has launched a campaign dubbed ‘Give Us a Name’, calling for the public’s involvement in establishing a moniker for the newcomer. The provider describes itself as a ‘innovative, socially responsible and maverick telecom operator’ as well as a ‘real catalyst of change, a partner of the people … [that] invests in communities to better their lives.’ The unnamed provider is rumoured to be linked to Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (TDCA), which operates under the ‘Roshan’ brand name and is backed by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), Monaco Telecom International and TeliaSonera. The largest cellco by subscribers in Afghanistan, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Roshan has spearheaded a number of telecoms-based programmes for development in Afghanistan, covering areas such as medicine, literacy, women and children.
