LIME launches LTE in Cayman Islands

11 Dec 2013

Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), operating under the LIME banner, has commercially launched its Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in the Cayman Islands. According to a company press release, the network, which was deployed by Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson, offers maximum download speeds of more than 100Mbps, and boasts 100% coverage across the Cayman Islands. LIME CEO Bill McCabe said: ‘The launch of LTE in the Cayman Islands marks the islands out as one of the best connected and best served countries not just in the region but anywhere in the world. Customers can click on a website and it will open immediately, stream a High Definition [HD] video without buffering and use an LTE portable Wi-Fi device… The freedom 4G LTE brings is immense.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in July 2013 LIME Cayman won two of the three 700MHz spectrum blocks earmarked by telecoms regulator the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA) for the provision of LTE services in the country. LIME secured the spectrum blocks after winning a ‘beauty contest’ against rival cellco Digicel Cayman Islands; the cellco was granted 2×24MHz frequency blocks in the 700MHz band, effectively leaving Digicel empty-handed. However, in September 2013 Digicel announced that it had been awarded a 20MHz LTE-suitable frequency block, also in the 700MHz band, and subsequently announced that it was planning to commercially launch its 4G LTE network on 6 December 2013, with exclusive access provided to participants in its ‘Early Adopter’ LTE programme from 29 November to 5 December.
