Altel deploys GSM networks in major cities

11 Dec 2013

CDMA operator Altel, which is owned by Kazakhtelecom (KT), has announced that it is close to completing the rollout of GSM networks in Astana, Almaty, Karaganda, Shymkent, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Aktau, Atyrau and Aktobe. Although the new network is not expected to go live until the first quarter of 2014, CDMA customers have until 31 December to trade in their existing CDMA handsets ‘on extremely favourable terms,’ it said.

TeleGeography notes that the CDMA-to-GSM switch is not the first network overhaul that Altel has undertaken this year. In September the company switched off its 3G network, after migrating users in Almaty and Astana across to its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) platform.
