Regulator set to renew Airtel licence in February

10 Dec 2013

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has approved an application from Airtel Malawi, the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, for the renewal of its operating licence. BiztechAfrica cites a statement from the regulator as saying that Airtel is set to receive permission to operate in Malawi for another ten years from February 2014, subject to further negotiations on a new set of licence terms and conditions that will take into account technology changes in the industry. Airtel Malawi will also have to undertake measures to meet minimum quality of service standards, as well as other conditions necessary to address challenges experienced during its current licence period.
