EE’s 4G network reaches ten new locations, 19 more expected by Christmas

5 Dec 2013

With UK mobile network operator EE announcing the launch of its 4G LTE-based services in ten more towns and cities, the cellco has also said it expects to add a further 19 locations to its network footprint by Christmas. Yesterday access to EE’s 4G product range was opened in 4G from Bath, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Darlington, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Northampton, Poole Portsmouth and Redcar. Looking ahead, the locations set to benefit from the increased download speeds that the LTE infrastructure can offer by the end of the year are: Aberdeen, Braintree, Cheltenham, Chester, Dundee, Durham, Exeter, Gloucester, Grimsby, Ipswich, Lincoln, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Peterborough, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea, Swindon and York. Subject to making good on its coverage expansion plans, EE has said that by the end of 2013 it will have rolled out 4G services to a total of 160 towns and cities across the UK, representing more than 60% of the UK population. The operator meanwhile expects to achieve 90% population coverage by the end of 2014.

Commenting on the development of the network, EE’s chief executive Olaf Swantee noted: ‘With every new town and city we switch on, the 4G revolution picks up pace. From Bath to Bournemouth, Northampton to Newcastle-under-Lyme, today’s towns and cities are the latest in a long line to get 4G from EE. By Christmas, 160 places across the UK will have 4G access, meaning that people and businesses can do more, trade more and connect more. That’s the fastest rollout of 4G in Europe, and with well over one million people already using the service, one of the most successful too.’
