Chunghwa Telecom targets 300,000 LTE subscribers by end-2014

4 Dec 2013

With Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom having previously said it was aiming to introduce commercial LTE-based services in the second half of 2014, the multi-service operator has said it expects to have around 300,000 4G subscribers on its books by the end of that year. In separate but related news, Telecompaper reports that Chunghwa has inked a mobile broadband network construction project deal worth TWD6.26 billion (USD156 million) deal with Ericsson Taiwan and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN).

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Chunghwa emerged from the state’s auction of 4G spectrum with the largest batch of frequencies in October 2013. Earlier this month it outlined plans to spend up to TWD40 billion (USD1.4 billion) on deploying more than 7,000 LTE-enabled base stations to cover at least 96% of the population over the next five years. CHT secured three bands in the spectrum auction, agreeing to pay TWD39.08 billion for three frequency blocks totalling 35MHz of bandwidth, with those blocks being the ‘B2’ block in the 900MHz band and the ‘C2’ and ‘C5’ blocks in the 1800MHz band.

Meanwhile, with regards to Chunghwa’s high-speed fibre-optic broadband service is expected to be available to 85% of Taiwan’s population by the end of this year, with the network footprint rising to 90% by end-2014, the telco’s chairman Lee Yen-sung has been cited as saying. The operator expects the number of customers signed up to its 100Mbps-capable product to reach 300,000 by the end of 2013, with that figure expected to triple to 900,000 in 2014.
