Aftel sets sights on GSM migration and 3G

2 Dec 2013

State-backed operator Afghan Telecom (Aftel) plans to launch 3G and GSM services, local news portal Wadsam writes. The operator, which falls under the aegis of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), has reportedly signed a USD32 million with an unnamed Chinese vendor to deploy GSM and 3G as well as an additional 700 towers in remote areas. The MCIT intends to migrate Aftel from its current fixed-wireless CDMA-based platform to GSM in a bid to lower call rates.
