Japanese telco Softbank has selected Swedish vendor Ericsson to provide and integrate its end-to-end mobile solution for Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services. According to a joint press release, the technology will offer subscribers high definition (HD) voice and video calling and new enriched multimedia services. Ericsson’s VoLTE infrastructure will also serve as the basis for Softbank’s future network virtualisation plans and telecom cloud introduction, and achieve more efficient spectrum utilisation in the network. Ericsson is upgrading Softbank’s existing mobile core network with a complete IMS core, which includes the Multimedia Telephony Application Server (MTAS), while Softbank’s LTE network is also being upgraded with a new end-to-end network handover functionality, Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC).
