Russian-backed cellco Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd (SSTL), which provides services under the MTS India brand, has announced that its ‘3G Plus’ offering is now available in all circles in which it operates. The cellco’s CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev B Phase II network provides theoretical download speeds of up to 9.8Mbps in its nine operating areas; Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh West and West Bengal. SSTL claims to be the first operator in the world to launch Rev B Phase II technology, having initially activated the network in Jaipur in September 2011. 3G Plus is available on a pre- or post-paid basis with prices starting at INR1,399 (USD22.85), which includes an ‘MBlaze Ultra’ dongle (usually priced at INR1,299) and 10GB of data.
Chief marketing and sales officer Leonid Musatov commented on the announcement: ‘MTS’ 3G Plus network will redefine the way customers experience mobile broadband as we roll out MBlaze Ultra across India. This state-of-the-art network empowers us to provide an enhanced consumer experience with even higher speeds, superior indoor penetration and outdoor coverage.’
In related news, the Economic Times writes that SSTL has confirmed that it is open to talks for potential mergers and acquisitions, saying that consolidation in the market is imminent and that no more than five operators would remain in the long run.
