US cable giant Comcast and network specialist Ciena Corporation have announced that they have successfully completed a live field trial of a 1Tbps optical transmission spanning nearly 1,000km. The trial took place during the first week of October over Comcast’s long-haul fibre infrastructure connecting Ashburn, Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina. The pair have claimed that the initiative represents the first trial in which live data traffic was carried over a 1Tbps 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) super-channel on an existing, commercial network.
