India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved the allocation of a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) to wireless startup Reliance Jio Infocomm, part of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) group and the only operator to win pan-India spectrum for 4G services. The Economic Times cites a DoT official as confirming that DoT has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the operator. In order to receive the concession, which will allow Jio to offer a full suite of mobile services, Jio must submit an entry fee of INR16.73 billion (USD272.4 million) as well as bank guarantees totalling INR2.64 billion.
