Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM), the country’s second largest wireless operator by subscribers, submitted an application for the renewal of its operating licence to the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) last month. BiztechAfrica reports that TNM’s 15-year mobile concession, which was awarded on 27 August 1999, is due to expire on 26 August 2014. ‘We are now ready to take on the second phase of our history in our quest to build a great company and serve the people of Malawi,’ the company said in a statement, in which it also requested that MACRA follow principles and processes to ensure an open, transparent and consultative renewal exercise. TNM, which crossed the two million active subscriber mark in July this year, said that its long-term business plans are built upon current licence terms and conditions, and as such noted that any significant changes to these conditions would have a major impact on the price of its products and services.
