Mississippi-based carrier C Spire Wireless has revealed plans for a 1Gbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service in its local market, Fierce Telecom reports, citing a press conference attended by state government officials, business executives, mayors and economic development leaders. In a move that echoes search engine giant Google’s ‘Google Fiber’ project – which identified eligible 1Gbps ‘fiberhoods’ through a public consultation – C Spire intends to engage with local communities via the ‘Get Fiber First’ programme, and hopes to ‘identify and begin working with the first community to make it a reality as quickly as possible’. The regional wireless operator, which also offers services through its Business Solution arm, notes that its rollout will be boosted by its existing 4,000 mile fibre backhaul network, which is set to be expanded in 2014 to support the company’s ongoing 4G LTE deployment.
