Ecuador’s National Telecommunications Council (Conatel) has initiated a process for amending the country’s Rules of Provision of Value Added Service, in order to establish a new regulatory framework that facilitates significant broadband internet service coverage expansion in areas nationwide, while reducing access costs and permitting technological neutrality for internet access methods employed by operators. The process of regulatory amendment was announced on the regulator’s website in compliance with Article 89 of the General Regulation of the Special Telecommunications Act. Conatel added that the process is aimed at supporting the government’s goal of reducing the national digital divide regarding access to internet services, serving an ‘urgent need to expand services to all citizens in different regions, in order to promote technology education and digital knowledge.’
