Wireless operator MTN Guinea (Areeba) has entered into a distribution agreement with Guinean telecoms retailer Guesse Communication (Guess Com). According to a press release, the agreement will allow the company to expand the scope and efficiency of its distribution network by increasing its presence at service points across the county. Guess Com’s CEO Mamadou Sanou Diallo stated: ‘This agreement fills a gap and will increase sales, especially the level of electronic refills (Taf Taf) sold.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, of the five GSM operators in Guinea, three are locked in a highly competitive fight for subscribers nationwide, those being MTN Guinea (Areeba), Orange Guinea and Cellcom. At the end of the first half of 2013, Orange reported 2.47 million subscribers, up by 62.8% year-on-year, closely followed by MTN with its 2.45 million users (16.7% increase y-o-y), while Cellcom Guinea’s subscriber base passed the two million mark (up by nearly 37.0%). Sotelgui and Intercel’s total subscriber bases both dropped, to an estimated 300,000 and 250,000 users, respectively.
