Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe’s largest cellco in terms of subscribers, has reportedly defied the ruling of telecoms regulator the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to reverse its latest price promotion ‘Buddie Zone’, which saw its call rates drop to USD0.10 per minute. Technology Zimbabwe reports that, in an interview with Econet’s CEO Douglas Mboweni, the executive reportedly stated: ‘[Our customers] have been enjoying Buddie Zone, and they will continue enjoying Buddie Zone, because we see nothing wrong with the offering.’ As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the regulator ordered Econet to stop the implementation and advertisement of the Buddie Zone promotion on 20 August 2013; POTRAZ threatened to penalise the telco if it does not comply with the ruling.
