Altel, the mobile subsidiary of state-backed operator Kazakhtelecom (KT), has announced a new timeline for the shutting down of its ‘Jet’-branded 3G network. All users within a 15km radius of Almaty and Astana will see the network deactivated on 31 August, while all subscribers within a 60km radius of the aforementioned cities will see 3G networks shut down from 15 September. All current Altel 3G users will be offered a free Long Term Evolution (LTE) modem if they are willing to upgrade to the 4G technology, with the cellco’s LTE network already active in Almaty and Astana. However, 3G users in other parts of the country will see not be affected by the switch-off.
