MTN South Africa has applied to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) for access to a 5MHz spectrum block in the 2010MHz-2015MHz frequency band, TechCentral reports. However, domestic rivals Smile Communications, Vodacom, Neotel and Cell C have all objected to the request, prompting the watchdog to schedule a public hearing for Wednesday 21 August. Vodacom and Cell C both claim that MTN’s application does not appear to adhere to the terms set out in the Electronic Communications Act, while Smile Communications has suggested that assigning the band would be ‘premature’, and should not be done until the 800MHz and 2500MHz bands have been allocated first.
