Russian wireless giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has announced the launch of Frequency Division Duplex Long Term Evolution (FDD-LTE) technology in Tambov, which is situated south-east of Moscow. By the end of the year MTS has promised to double the number of 4G base stations in operation in the region. MTS has confirmed that multi-standard 4G modems and routers, as well as a number of tablets and smartphones from leading vendors, are compatible with its FDD-LTE network. Previously, the cellco launched commercial FDD-LTE and Time Division Duplex (TDD-LTE) networks in Moscow. The company plans to cover around 600 population centres by the end of 2014.
