Hutchison increasing transmission ten-fold to 100G for business and consumer expansion

26 Jun 2013

Hong Kong fixed network operator Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) has launched a project to upgrade its entire fibre backbone infrastructure to increase transmission speeds to 100Gbps from 10Gbps to meet high bandwidth demand from business and residential users, and to support the launch of a range of new services in the second half of this year onwards. HGC has set a capital expenditure budget of HKD700 million (USD90.2 million) for projects including completing the 100G network to enable it to deliver super high speed direct fibre-based multimedia content-based services to its whole footprint of more than 10,000 fibre-connected buildings and more than 1.6 million households. The South China Morning Post reports that the 100G network will also serve as the infrastructure through which TVB Network Vision, the pay-TV business of free-to-air broadcaster Television Broadcasts, will transmit matches of the 2014 football World Cup in ultra high-definition. Byron Chiang Yung-hon, HGC’s technology director, said the network will allow more than a million TVB subscribers to watch World Cup matches in ultra HD, and Raymond Ho Wai-ming, consumer market director at HGC, said the company was keen to promote video-on-demand programming from third-party content providers like TVB to the households that it covers with direct fibre connections. In the business and wholesale sectors, the new high-capacity backbone network will interconnect HGC’s corporate customers, its data centres and its submarine cable landing stations, while the new network is also expected to accelerate HGC’s effort to provide an array of cloud computing services to both business and consumers in Hong Kong. Jennifer Tan Yuen-chun, HGC’s managing director, added: ‘Upgrading our backbone network is the major focus this year… We are working hard to deliver a network that will support intelligent buildings and the smart-connected devices that people use… We’re moving seamlessly into the content business with TVB as our partner.’ In April HGC contracted Swedish firm Transmode to supply packet-optical networking systems for its new high-capacity network over three years.
