VIPnet near-doubles cable internet speeds to 60Mbps

5 Mar 2013

Croatian cellco VIPnet – which includes the cable network operations of B.net Croatia it took over in mid-2011 – has raised cable broadband package speeds to 60Mbps, up from the previous maximum 32Mbps, via the expansion of HFC DOCSIS 3.0 technology which now covers the country’s seven largest cities – Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, Velika Gorica and Solin – and almost 300,000 households, according to the company’s release. VIPnet subscribers may still choose a 6Mbps (standalone internet only) option, a 12Mbps cable speed (only within a VIPnet ‘duo pack’ with TV or fixed telephony) or 20Mbps package, while the previous 32Mbps option has been replaced with two new HFC cable speeds of up to 40Mbps and 60Mbps. The new speed options are currently only available as part of a VIPnet ‘trio pack’ bundled with TV and fixed telephony on a 24-month contract.

TeleGeography notes that in the Croatian fixed network arena Telekom Austria subsidiary VIPnet also offers fixed telephony and ADSL services at up to 20Mbps utilising the local loop network of incumbent PSTN operator T-Hrvatski Telekom, while in October 2012 it launched its own IPTV platform under the ‘VipTV’ banner.
