Telstra and Ericsson renew LTE partnership, trial LTE Broadcast, expand fibre backbone

26 Feb 2013

Australia’s Telstra has announced that it will partner Ericsson for a live network trial of LTE Broadcast technology in the second half of 2013, which the telco says will improve the delivery of video to customers on the move, improve network efficiency and meet customer demand for new cutting-edge services.

Elsewhere, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona this week, Ericsson announced that Telstra has selected its next generation optical technology to expand the capacity of its metropolitan, regional and inter-capital long-haul optical networks. Ericsson will provide metro optical equipment, with the SPO 1400 family and the MHL3000 for long-haul applications, including support for 100Gbps services, using solutions including ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology with Multiservice DWDM and Packet Optical Transport Platform (POTP) equipment.

Also at MWC, Telstra and Ericsson announced the renewal of their longstanding strategic partnership to develop 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile in infrastructure and services, including an expansion of Telstra’s LTE network across Australia. The partnership also includes a trial programme of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) Carrier Aggregation and LTE heterogeneous networks, with the partners planning a subsequent commercial deployment of LTE-A in the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands.
