25 Feb 2013

Fixed line incumbent Telecom Malagasy (Telma) has signed an agreement with Sagemcom to extend the reach of the national fibre-optic backbone network, Agence Ecofin reports. The 2,000km extension will connect the northern cities Sainte-Marie, Maroantsetra, Antalaha, Sambava, Vohemar, Ambilobe and Antsiranana at the extreme north of the mainland by the end of 2013, whilst a subsequent expansion to be completed by end-May 2014 will connect Mahajanga in the northwest along with Marovoay, Ambondromamy, Mampikony, Port-Berger, Antsohihy, Ambanja and Nosy-Be. The USD20 million programme is expected to allow the number of broadband users to reach more than five million.
