French privately owned cable operator Numericable is understood to be planning a cash offer for fellow fixed and mobile operator SFR, a unit of Vivendi, according to an unconfirmed report on the French TV BFM website. The article, which cites unidentified sources with knowledge of the situation, claims that as talks between Numericable and Vivendi have now stalled on a possible merger, the former is preparing a bid to buy out SFR entirely in a cash deal – and then possible merge the pair at a later date. Numericable declined to comment on the report, while Vivendi repeated its assertion that SFR is not for sale, and that it is assessing other options for the telco – including network sharing.
