One of Brazil’s leading telecoms companies Telefonica (Vivo) has teamed up with Ciena Corporation to deploy the latter’s coherent optical technology to meet the carrier’s future bandwidth growth, as well as improving resilience and flexibility. In a first for Brazil, Ciena is supplying the first active 100G network in the country, connecting legacy 100GbE channels to the dense wavelength digital multiplexing (DWDM) system to provide ultra-high speeds for outbound international traffic. Under the contract, the Ciena-supplied network includes 100G routes that connect the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Praia Grande. As a result of the regional and long-haul domestic network upgrade, Telefonica (Vivo) will be the first domestic operator to deploy 100G, allowing it to extract more capacity out of existing fibre and support the delivery of high-bandwidth services and applications.
