Norwegian-backed cellco Uninor has closed down operations in Mumbai, after a Supreme Court order last week instructed carriers to terminate services in circles that they had not won spectrum. Telecom Lead writes that the sudden disconnection affected 1.8 million subscribers, although Uninor is planning to bid for a concession to resume operations in Mumbai in March. Commenting on the apex court’s decision, Uninor managing director Sigve Brekke said: ‘Unfortunately, we have no choice now but to follow the court’s order and close down our network immediately.’
Troubled cellco Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL), which operates under the MTS India brand name, will be unaffected by the court order by virtue of its status as a CDMA operator. As the regulator failed to auction CDMA spectrum in November, the operator has been given an extension, allowing it to maintain its operations until the next round of spectrum auctions in March.
