Mexican fixed line incumbent Telmex, which is a subsidiary of Latin American telecoms giant America Movil (AM), has been fined MXN657 million (USD51.6 million) by the country’s antitrust watchdog, the Comisison Federal de Competencia (CFC). According to Bloomberg, the financial penalty has been levied for anticompetitive practices, and comes after an investigation by the agency into the market for lines leased to competitors. In the examination of the sector, the CFC highlighted the fact that Telmex had failed to provide services for almost two years to alternative operator Axtel in 32 cities and on six inter-city routes.
It is understood that Telmex is still examining the CFC’s ruling on the matter, although the report has said that the telco has claimed that evidence it had provided to the watchdog had not been properly taken into account. The operator has 30 business days to appeal the decision.
