NEC bags contract for TPKM3 submarine cable system

28 Jan 2013

Japan’s NEC Corporation has announced that it has inked a supply contract with Taiwanese multi-service operator Chunghwa Telecom for the construction of the Taiwan Penghu Kinmen Matsu No.3 (TPKM3) Submarine Cable system. TPKM3 is a high-bandwidth non-repeater optical submarine cable that will link Taoyan (North Taiwan) with Matsu and Tainan (South Taiwan) with Kinmen through Penghu. Total length of the cable is expected to be 510km, and the link will reportedly help meet the domestic demand for voice and internet connectivity. The deal has reportedly been struck via NEC’s Taiwanese unit, and will see the vendor provide state-of-the-art optical submarine cables for non-repeater systems, and will conduct the ocean-lay work.
