Australian fixed line incumbent Telstra has confirmed that, following 18 months of work, it has completed a project under which it has migrated all existing copper services in the South Brisbane Exchange area to fibre. Following the work, the telco noted, it is now on track to hand over the exchange site to the Queensland government in June 2013, and it said that over the next five months it will decommission the exchange and associated infrastructure. In highlighting some of the key facts of the project, Telstra revealed that in total it laid 284 kilometres of cable and 26.4 kilometres of new conduit, while it also replaced or upgraded 1661 pits.
With regards to the new infrastructure it has constructed, Telstra has claimed that the project represents ‘the largest scale Optical Distribution Network [it] has designed and built’, adding that it provides fibre access to more than 13,000 homes and businesses in South Brisbane.
